William Wallace Davis letters, 1780-1870 bulk: 1861-1863.

Letters written by William Wallace Davis of Charlestown, Mass. while serving with the 5th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, 1861-63. Letters addressed to his aunt Margaret Goodwin Prichard, cousin Lizzie, and friend George M. Dowe describe traveling from Boston to Washington D.C., daily camp routine, and skirmishes in Virginia, April 1861-Oct. 1862; sailing from Boston to New Bern, N.C., and impressions of North Carolina, Jan.-May, 1863. Includes a poem probably written by Davis in 1870. Also includes a letter written by Revolutionary War soldier Samuel Evans of Wilmington, Mass. to his sister Sarah Evans Eaton inquiring about family members, 29 Aug. 1780.
